One of the food that I do enjoy and I actually think it reflects who I am must be the Kare raisu which is a Japanese dish strongly influenced by Indian curry. I still remember the first time I tried kare; it was at a Japanese festival in a November’s spring. At first I was looking over all the different kinds of dishes the restaurants were offering that afternoon. After giving up on trying some very exotic sushi rolls, I decided to try something completely new for me. Once I bought it, I could smell the authentic spiciness in it and the mixture of cultures in it. It was the first time trying it but since the first bite it tasted like home. What a pleasurable flavor. The potatoes, carrots and meat did a perfect complement for it and the white plain Japanese rice was the perfect partner. As deference to my best friend I invited her a tiny bite, perhaps I did not wanted to do it. After that, every time I visit a new Japanese restaurant I need to eat curry first, it is like a tradition my best friend and I have.
You may be wondering, how does this dish reflect who I am? First, the spicy could be that I’m sarcastic. All my friends are aware that I am inextricably linked to irony. Some of them may take it too seriously sometimes, though. Then the nationalities could be that even though I’m Peruvian, I’m strongly influenced by the Japanese culture since my early years. I got this from my cousins who live in Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Before he moved to Japan, I learned from him the proper standard Japanese, meaning I’m able to have a fluent conversation in that language. Finally, the potatoes represent my Peruvian roots, stronger than ever.
